Butterfly by Sonya Hartnett

Title: Butterfly Author: Sonya Hartnett Genre: Fiction, Young Adult Publisher: Candlewick Press Pages: 232

Price: 20.00$ CAN

Plum Coyle is on the edge of adolescence. Her fourteenth birthday is approaching, when her old life and her old body will fall away, and she will become graceful, powerful, and at ease. The strength of the objects she stores in a briefcase under her bed —a crystal lamb, a yoyo, an antique watch, a coin —will make sure of it. Over the next couple of weeks, Plum’s life will change. Her beautiful neighbor Maureen will begin to show Plum how she might fly. The older brothers she adores will court catastrophe in worlds that she barely knows exist. And her friends, her worst enemies, will tease and test, smelling weakness. They will try to lead her on and take her down. BUTTERFLY is a gripping, disquieting, beautifully observed coming-of-age novel by an acclaimed author at the top of her form.

Have you ever felt like you didn’t belong, even in your circle of friends? Sonya Hartnett brings us on a journey full of hope and drama. This YA Fiction makes you realize that everyone has their own side of a story. Each character is going through their own life crisis. While our main character Plum/Aria is trying to put her mark on the world, she doesn’t realize what is going on around her.

<<Plums believe that people around her do not care about her well-being. Lock away under her bed is a secret that might shatter her future. With her new-found friend will she ever found her strength to live happily?>>

A simple story that makes you reread every sentence because you keep wondering if you’ve read that line correctly. This book leaves me wondering what actually happens at the end of the book (was it the attention of the author?). I wouldn’t recommend this book for coming of age-children since this story is very complex and traumatizing. A beautiful and mean dark story that leaves you wondering for days on what actually happens.
